Advanced Functional Materials and Microsystem Technologies
All functions of modern high-tech products depend on accurately measured data. Up to a hundred sensors in vehicles contribute to safety, comfort, dynamics and environmental protection. High quality materials in all products determine their function, precision and durability. Materials from Bosch research provide the basis for quality that works even in the toughest conditions.
Lambda sensors measure residual oxygen in the exhaust gas. Their feedback is used to adjust the engine to maximize complete combustion. Bosch researchers are perfecting this exhaust gas technology to meet more stringent emissions requirements and to accommodate new components in the exhaust system, such as the particulate filter. Broadband lambda sensors can be used in gasoline, diesel and gas-fired engines, and even in gas-fired heating systems. Researchers use modeling of the sensor and simulations of its operational behavior to fine-tune its design and choose the materials to ensure that the component will function throughout the life of the vehicle.
